Technology has a big place in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. In Singapore, a robot dog called Spot has been traveling around Bishan-Ang Mo Kio since May 8. This ensures that walkers respect the rules of social distancing, reports Numerama. The city state accounts for more than 20,000 cases of Covid-19 infections despite measures taken well in advance of the epidemic and has experienced an upsurge of positive cases in recent weeks.

The role of Spot is twofold. He must first broadcast an audio message to people walking in the park to remind them of the rules of physical distance. He must also count the number of people he meets thanks to the multiple cameras with which he is equipped, specifies Numerama. According to the authorities, the robot dog does not target particular faces and "no personal data will be collected".

According to the government, the bitch-robot developed by Boston Dynamics will make it possible to reduce "the manpower necessary for the patrols of the park and will minimize the physical contacts". The dog was preferred to a wheeled robot, because it can more easily adapt to "different terrains and can effectively overcome obstacles", specify the authorities.

However, the dog is not alone. Like a guardian angel, an agent watches over him and is ready to intervene at the slightest problem. On posters posted in the park, the population is asked not to "disturb" the robot, which has, all the same, an effective device not to collide with a walker. The test will take place in Singapore until May 22. It is a question of determining if this solution is effective and can be recommended for other missions.
