The latest update of the Google Drive application for devices running iOS offers, since Monday, new possibilities in terms of security. Owners of iPhones or iPads can indeed activate a user authentication feature using Touch ID or Face ID devices, says The Verge . These are Apple's fingerprint recognition and facial recognition systems, respectively.
This security device has been dubbed Privacy Screen . To activate it, just go to the Google Drive settings page. The app was initially password protected, but this security measure was discontinued several years ago. Face ID and Touch ID do not guarantee to prevent all potential intrusions, however.
Some content is not secure
When activating Privacy Screen , the user is informed by Google that the protection system does not apply to images shared via the Photos app, content shared in the Files app, notifications from Google Drive, certain features of Siri and "other system functions," reports The Verge .
This new security method is configurable. It is for example possible to program it for an action each time the app is changed. A Face ID or Touch ID window will appear when the user returns to Google Drive. Security can also be suspended for ten seconds, one minute or ten minutes. This setting allows you to navigate between several programs without having to identify yourself again each time you return to the Google file sharing platform.
