The SuperVPN Free VPN Client app is one of the most popular free VPN apps in the world, with more than 100 million downloads in the Google app store , as many as Tinder or AliExpress apps. And yet it is also very dangerous, as a new study reveals.

According to VPNPro experts, it has a critical flaw that leaves it fully exposed to hackers who can intercept all communications between the user and the application when it is active. So if you use this VPN and enter your bank account, they could see without problem not only your balance, but also the password .

A very common use that is given to VPNs is to 'cheat' services like Netflix , whose catalog is different depending on the country from which you think you are entering or to pay less on your monthly subscription, as other countries have lower fees . As the VPN can tell Netflix that you enter from another country, something that can cost you the account if Netfix catches you, the user can access series and movies from other regions , as well as their prices.

In the same way, they could read all the emails and messages you send and steal without you knowing the user and the passwords you use in services such as Facebook, Gmail or even WhatsApp.

Hackers can act in various ways in this situation, but the most common would be to act as an intermediary in the communication between the user and the application, at which time they would send false information so that the operation of the service seems to be normal. By getting in the communications between the two parties, that's when they can steal sensitive information from users .

This is an ironic situation, as VPNs are used for the opposite, to hide the navigation trail and make interactions on the Internet , on paper, much safer. But in the case of this app, and many others that are free and less competent, it is very likely that the information comes to third parties .

Only with the 10 most used applications of this nature, more than 120 million people would be affected by this critical security flaw. And although the study was conducted in October 2019 and all those responsible for it were notified, only one of them decided to change their procedures to protect users.

According to the study, there are many other applications that have this fault , the most important being the following. Some have already been removed, but since it has only been done recently, you could still have them on your mobile:

  • Super VPN Free VPN Client (100 million downloads)
  • Best Ultimate VPN (10 million downloads)
  • TapVPN Free VPN (5 million downloads)
