Road traffic was restored around 11 p.m. in Mayotte, but some areas of tension remained after the death of a man shot dead by a police officer who used his service weapon. The latter was placed in police custody and heard by the research section of the gendarmerie.

Violence broke out on Sunday in Mayotte after the death of a man in his thirties who was shot dead by a police officer in Kawéni, north of the capital Mamoudzou. According to investigators, the victim struck the baton with a baton on the head of a man Sunday morning when a patrol of the anti-crime brigade passed nearby.

A police officer attempted to intervene but, despite several summons, the man refused to stop hitting. The officer then used his service weapon, hitting it in the abdomen. The victim was quickly taken care of by the emergency services, but his death was announced at the end of the afternoon.

"Our colleague acted in self-defense"

In the process, young people set up roadblocks on a main road, attacking motorists, then they ransacked and looted two businesses, including a Tati store. The gendarmerie and the police intervened to disperse them. Road traffic was restored around 11 p.m., but some areas of tension remained.

The police officer was placed in police custody and heard by the police's research section. The investigation should determine the circumstances of the tragedy and the responsibilities of each. "Our colleague acted in self-defense, he responded proportionately and strictly necessary following an assault by a third person," reacted Djamaldine Djabiri, departmental secretary of the SGP FO union.

"And the fact that coercive measures are taken against him does not in any way mean that the officer behaved badly," he continued.
