Airbnb could use artificial intelligence to analyze the personality traits of its users. The objective: to detect people likely to pose a problem to the owners of the accommodation offered for rental, reports the Evening Standard.

This algorithm has already been the subject of a patent, filed in 2019. The development of this tool is the logical continuation of Airbnb's purchase in 2017 of Trooly, according to the newspaper. This start-up specializing in profile verification was designed to explore websites and accounts of people on social networks. Airbnb did not specify whether the program was already in service.

Look for signs of neurosis or psychopathy

According to the patent, this RN can seek information on the potential tenant in order to assess his "reliability and [his] compatibility" with the owner, but also his "behavior pattern and [his] character". "Morality", possible signs of "neuroses, involvement in crimes" or "narcissism, Machiavellianism or psychopathy" are identified.

For this, the algorithm reviews the photos, videos, keywords or the type of vocabulary of the people studied. The “personal digital footprint” inspection process worries some experts. "We are rapidly moving towards an addiction to AI for decisions in which humans would normally use their common sense," warns Alan Woodward, cybersecurity expert.
