• Analysis: Surface Pro 7: Microsoft has its MacBook Air (for better and for worse)
  • Analysis.Surface Laptop 3: Microsoft keeps trying to create the perfect laptop

Surface Pro X is all that Surface Pro 7 is missing. Its design takes a spin on a concept - the tablet that becomes portable with a keyboard that also serves as a case - that already needed a face wash. It is light, sweeping, silent and with more than respectable autonomy. Unfortunately, to achieve this he had to resort to an ARM processor; a pact with the devil from which, for now, it is very difficult to emerge victorious.

Without going into technicalities, it is necessary to understand the difference between processors with ARM architecture (the one that assembles this Surface - in this case developed by Microsoft - and generally reserved for mobile devices) and the x86 (which are usually found in laptops around kind). The former are less powerful, but have better autonomy and allow the terminals to be much lighter, thinner and quieter.

The other side of the coin makes us see that, in fact, it is a chocolate one: they need applications developed with them in mind . Yes, thanks to the Microsoft emulator, Surface can move some programs developed for x86 processors (32-bit, never 64), but it does it the way things are done on the first Monday of September: barely and why there is no other.

This means that the experience with Surface Pro X is completely different from that of any other laptop, as there will be thousands of programs that will not be compatible . Others will run at a marathon pace despite being made for 100 meters. And it is not very clear that the situation will change.

The result is the best equipment on the market that is useless. As much as its design is spectacular, there will always be a similar terminal - and possibly cheaper - that, at the very least, you can install the programs with which Pro X can only dream . Now, if they finally arrive (Adobe has already promised versions of its entire Creative Suite, although they have no date) it will be one of the rivals to beat and the closest thing to a mix between all MacBook (including the one that has no surnames) of Windows ecosystem.

Performance is perfect in applications optimized for your processor. In those that are not, the environment of the approved round, according to the program. However, you can complete a work day thanks to its autonomy -Microsoft talks about 13 hours of moderate use; With a more intensive one, you stay away from them - and the fact that everything you can use includes everything that Office covers . Games and other programs will depend on the developer making a compatible version or the Microsoft emulator (which, remember, only works with 32-bit versions).

Not all are buts in this hybrid. The fact that it is half portable and half tablet is one of its advantages, as it is for the entire Surface range (except for Laptop, of course). Its finish is the most elegant that has come out of Microsoft not already in many years, but possibly throughout its history . The black aluminum body conveys a feeling of luxury that only dissipates when we see that it tends to remain full of footprints within a few minutes of use.

The screen is another of its strengths despite being able to go a step further in regards to brightness. The very little that is missing to be perfect makes up for it with practically invisible frames.

As always, the set is completed by Surface Keyboard , which in this case also comes in a new version, Signature. The difference is that this keyboard has a hole for the touch pen, Slim Pen, which is also included in the modest nothing-price: 295 euros for the pack.

Slim Pen does everything that is expected of him with the only drawback of not having the most ergonomic body - or the most beautiful, why fool us - of the market. Its 'burrow' is much more practical than it may seem at first glance: it not only serves to load it, but it greatly facilitates its transport. When you live in a fold of the keyboard you really have to feel like losing it . With regard to the keyboard itself, the possibility of tilting it slightly to 'close the door' will be welcomed by many.

The trackpad, meanwhile, is quite accurate and is more than enough size. The only problem of this format is that it is not very comfortable to work with the laptop on the legs because it lacks stability , although this is something that it shares with the whole range, regardless of the processor (or the surface, muscles and general stability of the user's legs).

Everything bad would be forgiven to Surface Pro X if it weren't for its price. Microsoft's bet is interesting and maybe in a few years - if not months - let's start seeing other laptops with ARM processors. But paying no less than 1,149 euros (price of the model of 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, without counting the 150 of the cheapest keyboard) for a promise, however good, is too much. Leaving until 2,293.99 of the most expensive configuration is directly incomprehensible.

Surface Pro X, saving the distances, remembers the Galaxy Fold: it is a very good looking product that arrives on the market long before it is ready to receive you. Those who buy it will be both users and beta testers.

There are differences, of course, in the same way that it is not the same to arrive six hours ahead of a party than to appear three quarters of an hour before. With the Samsung folding phone the host is not even at home; With the Microsoft laptop, we can start chopping some canapé and even open a beer. However, it will be time to throw a cable to prepare everything, when we wanted to dance. You know: not much early, early ARM.
