Uganda has given permission to Loon, a sister company of Google, to launch internet balloons in the airspace. This allows Loon to offer 4G internet in neighboring Kenya.
Loon announced in July that he would like to use the internet balloons to offer mobile internet in Kenya. The balloons are equipped with transmitting equipment, solar panels and a battery and sail on air currents at a height of 20 kilometers.
Permission from the Ugandan authorities is needed because the balloons can end up in the airspace of the East African country.
It is unclear when Loon, together with the Kenyan provider Telkom Kenya, will let the balloons fly exactly above the country. "We hope to start very soon," says Loon spokesman Scott Coriell.
