The security company Checkmark recently published a blog post in which it warned of a dangerous vulnerability that allowed any attacker to access the camera of Google (Pixel range) and Samsung phones without the user knowing. Thus, they could take photos or record videos without their permission and upload them to a server. Both companies solved the problem a few months ago, after being notified.

This vulnerability was especially dangerous because it was able to circumvent the necessary permissions and only needed to request access to internal storage. In this way, he could camouflage his intentions with a request that might seem logical and then access the camera.

Thus, they created a false application that theoretically served to know the weather forecast and with it they could carry out this type of attacks and even locate the phone (through the geolocation of the photos) and record audio and video of a telephone conversation.

Once Checkmark checked the extent of the vulnerability, it notified Google and Samsung and sent them evidence of what they had been able to do. Both companies created patches that corrected the ruling, which has been resolved since July of this year. At the moment it does not appear to have been used to attack users.
