Facebook and YouTube remove messages and videos in which statements are made about the identity of the whistleblower in the Ukraine affair. The information of the unknown person forms the basis of the current deposition procedure against US President Donald Trump.

In a statement, Facebook states that mentioning the name of the whistleblower is contrary to its internal rules. They prohibit the publication of the identity of "eyewitnesses, informers and activists". Facebook will "remove all entries from the name".

A spokesman for YouTube tells CNN that videos showing the alleged name of the whistleblower is called also removed. The rule also applies to the titles and descriptions of videos.

A Twitter spokesperson tells the American channel that it is not against the rules on the social medium to tweet a name.

Facebook makes article content 'not available'

The right-wing news site Breitbart published an article on October 30 with information about the suspected whistleblower's identity. Since Wednesday this article can no longer be read on Facebook and people who click on the link on Facebook get the message that it is "not available".

The whistleblower revealed earlier this year that Trump had put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a telephone conversation. Trump wanted Zelensky to conduct a corruption investigation into his potential counter-candidate in the presidential election Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

In recent days, several Republican politicians have insisted on making the whistleblower's identity public.
