The representative needs three things: suit, offer, car. The latter is primarily a VW Passat station wagon. Wolfsburg's long-handled donkey has been the representative car for years, because it's extremely practical. An expert jury of fleet and fleet managers also chose the Passat for the ranking of the trade journal firmenauto in 2019 as the mid-range car of the year.

70,007Passat were newly admitted last year, according to official registration statistics of the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt in Flensburg in Germany, three quarters of which as a company car. Three other models from Wolfsburg were ahead of the Passat: on the first place of the champions Golf, followed by Tiguan and Polo. Above all, the SUV Tiguan and the general trend towards the SUV are causing the Passat. "The trend in sales is declining," says Martin Hube, spokesman for VW for middle-class models. Nevertheless, the Passat is not finished, as is often speculated. In Wolfsburg, despite all the doomsaying, the 9th generation of the endurance runner is already working.

The 8th generation has been on the market since 2014 and has now been slightly revamped with a facelift for the second product life cycle. Inside, some things are new and the hybrid with the model name GTE has gotten a battery with more capacity. The standard engine of the dealership is the 2.0-liter diesel engine with 110 kW. Every third buyer has opted for this variant of the auto-ignition. The share of GTE was so far modest four percent. "For this engine variant, we have expanded the production capacity to 15 percent for the facelift model," says Hube. It could also be 20 percent, according to the VW spokesman. The hybrid should regain the market share that the diesel loses.

For about a year, the sale of the GTE was suspended because VW did not have enough batteries and the approval of the engine after the WLPT procedure was drawn. For one year, new cars have only been approved if emissions and consumption have been determined using this measurement method.

Battery creates reasonable driving 45 kilometers

Remarkable about the hybrid drive of the GTE is that it is the only one of the possible Passat engines already today that meets the Euro 6d emissions standard, which will apply from 2021 onwards. The three petrol and four diesel engines that VW offers for the Passat meet the currently valid 6d-Temp standard. Because exhaust emissions tests were tightened in September, Euro 6d temp vehicles can only be registered within the EU for the first time until the end of 2020. In other words, these burners must soon meet the future standard. Obviously they do not yet, which means that changes to the engines are necessary.

The PassatGTE has a 115 kW petrol engine and an electric motor with 85 kW. These values correspond to the predecessor model. What is new is the 31 percent increase in the energy content of the electric drive battery to 13 kWh. According to paper, this capacity in the station wagon for officially 54 kilometers will be enough - according to the new measurement method. This route corresponds to the old NEDC standard about 70 kilometers. In fact, the battery creates 45 kilometers in reasonable driving.

The first surprise in the Passat GTE is that this electric range is enough to be on the road with the electric drive during the week. The second is a matter of the mind: The burner takes away the fear of being left with an empty battery. The third major finding of a hybrid comes at long distances: A second car is not necessary because the GTE has two drives. Electric for short distances, the burner for long distances. A hybrid is a car for different demands under a hood. But diversity has its price. The GTE costs as a combination with just under 46,000 euros about 6,000 euros more than the cheapest combined with burners.

Instead of the previous five, the Passat 8.2 has three operating modes for the drive, making it easier to operate the car: purely electric driving goes up to 140km / h. Combined it is divided into two parts: in sporty driving with both drives or in the automatic change between electric motor and combustion engine. In this case, the software selects the ideal drive type for the respective driving situation. The two drives bring each other so harmoniously into the game that the driver does not notice.

Always-on with permanently installed SIM

The car is equipped with a 3.6 kW charger. The charging takes about six hours on the household socket with 230 volts, and two hours faster on wall boxes or charging stations with 360 volts.

In the new passport, LED headlights are now standard. We recommend the Matrix LED light for a surcharge of 1,840 euros. It allows the driving of long-lasting high beam by being on the oncoming traffic. Heller is hardly possible. Inside the car is now a SIM card permanently installed and the Passatdamit always-on. Thus, the navigation system is always on the current traffic conditions and can guide the driver around traffic jams. In addition, VW has integrated a digital logbook in the car, which retrieves its data from the vehicle and meets all the requirements to be accepted by the tax office.

When space in the interior of the Passat is unbeatable. At the front, it is comfortable, for passengers in the fund, the same applies and the trunk seems infinitely long. No wonder that the Passat station wagon is the favorite vehicle. Big mouth and much behind.

In April, the thirty millionth Passat left the production line at the Emden plant. No other mid-range model and no other business car was sold more often worldwide than the Passat. The jubilee pass was a GTE variant with the new hybrid drive, the hopefuls for this slick model.
