We review the history and origins of one of the most popular snacks in the world

As American as it may seem, the "hot dog" is not an American invention . It is the succession of a series of events and causations that resulted in a portion of minced meat wrapped in bread and eventually called hot dog. Each step belongs to a part of a story that begins, as soon as, in Mesopotamia.

History of the "hot dog"

Of the origins of the sausage there is nothing clear but many sources agree that the emergence of this sausage occurred around 3,000 BC . All cultures learned to take advantage of those parts of the animals (meat, blood or viscera), which for one reason or another were to be discarded but could be ingested. In fact, in almost every kitchen in the world you can find different types of sausages. From our blood sausage, sausage, chistorra, fuet or chorizo, to name just a few, to the Vienna or Toulouse sausage, the American bologna, the Slovak kranjska klobasa or the Polish cabanossi.

The Frankfurt sausage , with a protected designation of origin since 1860, is the original hot dog sausage. In Germany it is originally known as "dachshund sausage", a fundamental fact when it comes to understanding history.

From Germany to the world

Although the creation of hot dogs seems to come from the United States, the ones who really invented it were the Germans . Surprise! Although their origins arose in Germany, the name that made them popular comes (more or less) from the American country.

During the 19th century, thousands of Germans crossed the pond in search of a better life. Migrants who, in addition to establishing new customs, brought there a new sausage made with minced meat: the Frankfurter sausages or "dachshund sausage". A new product that conquered the palate of all the premises due to its flavor and its low cost of production and sale.

One of these Germans, took advantage of the popularity of the product to start marketing their freshly cooked sausages. But, observing that those who took her to eat in the street (the classic "take away") ended up burning her hand, she asked a baker to create a special bread to accompany them while serving to hold them . This is how the bread for the dogs emerged, a soft and fluffy baby roll that has become the best way to put it in your mouth. But ... where does his name come from?

All for a drawing ...

In one of the mythical American baseball games, a German decided to go to the game to sell his "dachshund sausages" wrapped in bread. To make themselves known and sell them all, the vendor said: "They're red hot! Get your" dachshund sausages "while they're red hot" Get your dachshund sausages now that they are hot ). A phrase that drew the attention of all those around him, unable to find meaning in one of those words, "dachshund."

Among them was the graphic humorist Tad Dorgan, who understood a perfect German and laughed, understanding the meaning of that. Well, in addition to referring to sausages, that word meant "dachshund . " A few days later, the cartoonist decided to make a vignette of a dachshund between two breads and making that German sausage become one of the best known dishes of American cuisine.
