The cashier at a store in Japan has stolen credit card information from more than 1,300 customers with an unprecedented modus operandi : he used his photographic memory to remember the 16 digits, the expiration date and the security codes.

Yusuke Taniguchi , a 34-year part-time cashier who worked at a shopping center in Tokyo , has admitted that when he helped customers pay, he memorized the details of their credit cards.

According to the Gizmodo media, there is some debate about whether Taniguchi has photographic memory , which allows him to recover details accurately months later, or eidetic memory , which allows him to retrieve the information a few minutes later. This question has arisen since a key piece in the evidence against man is a notebook that he always kept with him and in which he wrote down all the information on the cards.

Resold the items

According to the Asian media ANN , Taniguchi has admitted to using the fraudulent credit card information to buy luxury items that he later resold to pay the rent, the purchase and to cover his expenses.

It looked like the perfect scheme, but his master plan had a crack : he ordered the items, bought with the stolen information, from his home. This was how the Tokyo Metropolitan Police managed to trace the thefts of Taniguchi since, after buying two bags with products worth 2,263 euros that they sent to his apartment, the police could identify him and subsequently arrested him.

The case has grabbed the attention of local media by the unusual theft technique used by the author. But it has also served as a reminder that there are always different, and unpredictable, methods of stealing information and money.
