Theater

After its absolute premiere in Mérida, the 'Antígona' by Víctor Ullate Ballet is presented at the Theaters del Canal. A free version of the Greek drama written by Sophocles that delves into tragic love

Víctor Ullate and Eduardo Lao dance the Antigone tragedy with a luxury protagonist, the first guest dancer Lucía Lacarra (Zumaia, Guipúzcoa, 1975). He has performed for the first time a few weeks ago, at the Teatro Romano de Mérida, the magnificent stage where his absolute premiere was made. "It has been an unforgettable experience. Dancing in this theater takes your breath away and much more incarnating a woman like this, with such a strong personality and with such fixed beliefs," says the international artist, who combines her role in this ballet with the participation in star galas around the world.

At the core of the myth of Sophocles is the dichotomy between the laws of the gods and those of man, between conscience and obedience. Antigone is a woman with a firm character and her confrontation with power - she wants to bury her brother Polinices, in the face of the refusal of King Creon, her uncle - will cause the change of the laws of Thebes. Of course, for Creon to replace divine justice with human justice, the protagonist has had to sacrifice, death that drags the son and wife of the king.

In this free version on the myth , the directors of Víctor Ullate Ballet underline the love story between Antigone and Hemon, son of Creon, played by Josué Ullate , holder of the Leonide Massine Positano Prize for Dance, from Italy. "As we do not express ourselves with the word, Ullate and Lao have wanted to deepen their relationship so that it is understood why Hemon does what he does when he finds Antigone dead," explains Lacarra. "Thus, we dance an intense step-by-step that brings information about his love. He supports him in the difficult moments he lives and this is told through the choreography."

Dressed in Greek-inspired costumes , signed by Iñaki Cobos, Lucía Lacarra -which will take turns in the character with Laura Rosillo-, Josué Ullate, Mariano Cardano (Creonte) and Keiko Oishi (Euridice), like the rest of the cast, are illuminated by Luis Perdiguero and dance backed by the scenery of Curt Allen Wilmer, composed of dozens of drums.

The 2005 National Dance Prize claims not to have been inspired by previous dramatic performances , such as that of the great Greek actress Irene Papas, whose film about the myth can be seen online. "I never see the work of other dancers or actors and now I have not done it either. What I always do is read a lot about the subject, to understand what drives the character to behave as he does, and, of course, follow the guidelines of the choreographers. "

Timeless symphony

Eduardo Lao and Víctor Ullate have created their Antigone on a musical collage where they have joined themes of the British Peter Gabriel and Lisa Gerrard (awarded with a Golden Globe for their collaboration in the Gladiator soundtrack), among others. To its melodies is added the sound designed by Miguel Lizarraga, which includes the effect of a storm at sea as the beginning of the action. "I think it's in the fusion of the different styles where the magic is," says the dancer. "A very special atmosphere is created with the mix and the result is a timeless environment."

In the final stretch of a year in which he has also exercised the direction of Víctor Ullate Ballet for a few months, Lacarra joins his talent to a portentous physicist who allows him to remain high when he has already turned 44 years old . "I love dance and I want to continue dancing. After Antigone , I will go to California with Mattthew Golding to premiere a second, very peculiar act of Swan Lake . And then, I will continue to collaborate with the Dortmund Ballet in Germany. creation about Tchaikovsky and the last part of a trilogy based on The Divine Comedy . In the remaining years, I want to enjoy projects that motivate me. "
