More than 2,300 tigers, victims of international trafficking, have been seized by the authorities since 2000, two a week, alerted Wednesday, August 21, the NGO monitoring wildlife trade Wildlife Traffic.

While there were 100,000 wild tigers on the planet in the early twentieth century, they are now 3,200, said the report of the NGO Traffic , which monitors the trade in wildlife and wild flora. Three subspecies have completely disappeared.

Ceaseless catches

For the past decade, India and the leaders of twelve other countries that have been home to felines have committed to doubling their population by 2022. But tigers continue to be captured without respite.

Poachers are not just interested in tiger skin. Eyes, mustaches, claws are also very popular. The bones are ground to finish in powder and used especially in Chinese medicine.

" Avoiding new disappearances "

According to Traffic, tigers are indeed victims of international traffic. India, which has the largest population of wild tigers in the world, remains the country with the highest number of seizures. And in Indonesia, the number of seizures would have multiplied by four between 2015 and 2018.

Kanitha Krish Nasamy, Director Traffic, is alarmed and believes that " the time for discussions is over: words must give way to acts to prevent new tiger disappearances ".
