Since August 2017, users can chat with each other via the message function on YouTube. Two years later, the video platform quit because it wants to focus on public discussions.

The chat function is for the web version of YouTube, but also for the mobile apps on iOS and Android. In particular, the option is a way to quickly share a video with another YouTube user.

Sharing videos remains possible according to YouTube, although users will have to copy and paste links in chat windows outside the video service.

Recently, YouTube has focused on the development of YouTube Stories. This allows video makers to post low threshold videos as stories that disappear after a while, such as on Snapchat and Instagram. This feature is available for YouTubers with at least ten thousand followers.
