A 50-year-old Swiss man drowned on Monday after making a 15-meter jump into a river in Chisa, Haute-Corse, firefighters said.

"He dipped 15 meters into a hole 8 to 10 meters deep, he probably had a bad reception and found himself stuck on the bottom of the water," said a spokesman for firefighters, adding that the accident took place at the locality of Trois Bassins, "a well known place for this kind of accident".

A difficult place of access

The victim, who was on vacation on the Isle of Beauty with his wife and three children, died in the minutes following his jump while the rescue took nearly an hour to reach this remote place. Contacted at 1700 hours, the rescue teams composed of a team from the Reconstruction and Intervention in Perilous Environments Group (GRIMP) and a team from the Aquatic Reconnaissance and Response Unit (GRIMA) put two hours to get out the body, stuck at the bottom of one of these natural pools.

The wife and children of the victim, shocked, were taken care of by the relief before being taken to a communal house, according to the same source.
