Instagram has rolled out a new feature for users in the United States to report fake news and other fake information. Engadet discovered this in the American version of the app.

When users see a message with fake information, they can click on the dots at the top right of a post and report the message. In addition to the existing option for marking a message as bullying or a threat, users can now also provide false information as an option.

Instagram did a fake news report earlier this year, where reported messages were checked by a team of fact checkers. This does not happen with this version: if a message is reported a number of times due to false information, the message will drop down on the overview pages.

This option is not yet available in the Netherlands and it is not known whether Instagram will roll out this function here.
