In the heart of Lavapiés, the old tobacco factory, stands as a witness to the history of the neighborhood and acts as a cultural center

Its past

Located at the height of the number 53 of Embajadores street, in the middle of the roundabout, the history of the old tobacco factory in Madrid is also that of the Lavapiés neighborhood. Initially conceived as the Royal Factory of Aguardiente and Naipes , the building changed its purpose in 1809. After the cessation of activity in 2000 and a period of abandonment that lasted for almost a decade, today he continues to write his story ...

The culture lives between the walls

It is not uncommon to see how in Tabacalera's programming converge names of names already established with projects of emerging artists , whose looks and concerns are framed in different disciplines: from the plastic arts to photography. Within the PHotoEspaña festival, the Normandie: Les rivages du débarquement exhibition, in which the Valencian photographer Eduardo Nave revisits the scenes of the famous Normandy landing, is an example of this. Another option is Eloy de la Iglesia. Dark object of desire , a collection of images that vindicates the figure of this director, who challenged Franco with his crude and realistic cinema. Both samples can be visited until next September 8.

Color outside the walls

With five editions already celebrated, the Walls Festival , promoted by the Madrid Street Art Project collective, brings together a large group of artists from the urban scene , including illustrators, graphic designers and graffiti artists . With a brush and spray in hand, for several days they renew the exterior appearance of this cultural center in intense days that have already reached a certain level of popularity among the neighbors of the neighborhood. Each year, the theme varies ... On which the different interventions of the last edition revolved was chance, whose multiple readings can still be seen, simply taking a walk on the sidewalk that surrounds the building.
