Although for a part of the Netherlands the summer vacation is coming to an end, most of them still have plenty of vacation. For those who still have to go, this might be the time to quickly buy a cheap holiday cart. Perhaps a true MPV is an idea? This body shape has completely gone out of fashion and has become extremely cheap.

In the nineties, you as a manufacturer must have an MPV, or a multi-purpose vehicle, on offer. A handful of brands, including Chrysler and Renault, had the empire alone with models such as the Voyager and Espace.

Other manufacturers therefore joined forces to come up with such a car quickly. Peugeot and Citroen, for example, joined forces with Fiat and Lancia and Volkswagen entered into a partnership with Ford.

The real breakthrough in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe followed in 1996, when Renault launched the Mégane Scénic a segment lower in the market. This made the MPV accessible to a larger audience. The model was promptly voted Car of the Year and was soon followed by models such as the Citroën Xsara Picasso and the seven-seater Opel Zafira.

MPV has gone out of fashion

In the meantime, the MPV has fallen out of favor and consumers often opt for a cross-over or SUV. At its peak in 2000, more than 15,000 copies of the Scénic were registered in the Netherlands. This year the sale will probably be below 2,000.

The manufacturers are therefore not saying out loud that there will be successors to the still available MPVs. "The Citroën C4 SpaceTourer came on the market not so long ago, so for the time being we will definitely continue with this model and sales in the segment of our Citroën are still there," said PR manager Anne Lobbes.

"The Touran and Sportsvan are important models for Volkswagen. Some 1,000 copies were sold in the Netherlands last year. Volkswagen has not yet made any statements about the next generation of these models," said the Dutch importer.

Reasonable copies for less than 1,000 euros

The combination of a little popular body shape and a large offer has greatly reduced prices. For a midi-MPV with air conditioning that has run less than 100,000 kilometers, you pay less than 1,000 euros. For that amount it concerns a many cases a Renault Mégane Scénic.

Models like the Mitsubishi Space Star, Daewoo Tacuma, Nissan Almera Tino and Mazda Premacy how to transfer no more than 1,500 euros in many cases. A Hyundai Matrix, Citroen Xsara Picasso and Opel Zafira are also very competitively priced with amounts of around 2,000 euros.

The Volkswagen Touran came on the market a little later than most competitors and is therefore a bit more expensive. A copy that meets our requirements quickly costs more than 5,000 euros. The Ford C-Max is just below that.

Forgotten models

For those who are not that surprised by a high mileage, a lot of aparts is for sale. The Renault Avantime, a particularly stylized cross between an MPV and coupé, was only built for two years. For the money of a Volkswagen Touran you also have this very exclusive MPV.

The Lancia Phedra is the result of a collaboration between Fiat and PSA, the parent company of then Peugeot and Citroën. The group released four MPVs, of which the Phedra is one. According to good Lancia use, it is the most luxuriously decorated version with Alcantara upholstery on the seats, the dashboard and the door panels. You can take the gamble for around 2,000 euros.

Of course, the often maligned Fiat Multipla cannot remain unmentioned. The model, which has repeatedly been voted the ugliest car, is becoming increasingly rare and specimens with the most controversial appearance are in great demand as a car.

Models after the facelift are often still there. These cars lack the now iconic appearance of the first version. If you find that an advantage, you also have a copy for around 2,000.
