A 17-year-old Italian teenager admitted to launching the trash that seriously injured a young French boy sleeping on a beach in northwestern Italy, the carabineros said on Tuesday. The young Italian "said he was very saddened" by what he did, Dario Ragusa, a colonel of Carabinieri from Savona, Italy, told reporters.
On the night of Saturday to Sunday, the teenager had thrown, from a height of 20 meters, a trash can on a beach below where slept under a tent the French boy with his family. The 12-year-old suffers from head trauma and is being observed in the intensive care unit of a pediatric hospital in Genoa. According to the story of the head of the carabineros, the Italian teenager would have left to "half drunk" a discotheque located near the cliff overlooking the beach. It was three o'clock in the morning and he wanted to buy a sandwich but the neighboring kiosk was closed. Probably out of spite, he would have thrown the trash can away thinking that she would fall into the sea. "I did not know there were people below," he confessed to the carabineers, according to the same source.
The carabinieri went back to the culprit, interrogating dozens of young people that night in the disco and some of whom had seen him throw away the trash. The first hypothesis of the carabineers was that of "a voluntary gesture" directed against "camping wild", banned in Italy, before abandoning this track and dig that of an imbalance or a drunk, according to media reports .
The family of the victim, from Haute-Savoie according to the Italian media, has two other children aged 14 and 15 who were also sleeping on the beach of Bergeggi, not far from Savona.
