Russian Ekaterina Makarova has won in the second round of the US Open against the German Julia Görges. The world ranking ninth lost on Wednesday in New York 6: 7 (10:12), 3: 6. Görges had defeated the former top ten player and former US Open semi-finalists in the previous week's tournament in New Haven yet.

Görges had reached the first knockout round last year in Flushing Meadows - and now threatens to fall out of the top ten in the world rankings. In the afternoon temperatures of more than 35 degrees, the 29-year-old lacked the luck against the one-year-old Makarowa a bit to keep the upper hand as in the previous week at the tournament in New Haven.

"I did not play my best game, the first set was crucial to the game," said Görges, looking at three set balls in the first round.
