Spaniard Fernando Verdasco has ended the grand slam comeback of former world number one Andy Murray in the second round of the US Open. Positioned at position 31, Verdasco converted his third match point after nearly three and a half hours - winning against the British 7: 5, 2: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4.

Former tournament winner Murray played his first major in New York for 14 months. The 31-year-old had surgery on the hip at the beginning of the year. From the previous 14 duels with the 34-year-old Verdasco on the tour Murray had lost only one.

Verdasco now face Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro in the third round on Friday, who won the US Open in 2009 and is now in third place.

In the third round, it was also the Swiss Stan Wawrinka. He prevailed against French qualifier Ugo Humbert 7: 6 (7: 5), 4: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5 and now meets Milos Raonic (Canada / No 25).

Behind Wawrinka is also a month-long injury break. After a cartilage damage, the three-time Grand Slam champion is at the US Open only thanks to a wildcard here.
