The 2-0 victory in the friendly international match in France gives many DFB fans hope that the European Championship in the summer could be a success after all. Many fans are still dissatisfied with the goal anthem. “Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation is currently playing at German gates; the song won in a survey.

According to the wishes of some fans, this should be an end; they would like “Major Tom” by Peter Schilling to be the goal anthem at the European Championships.

Song fits a feeling of new beginnings

What triggered the request: The current DFB supplier Adidas had set one of its advertising clips for the new jerseys to the song from 1982, which is still popular today. The idea of using this song as a goal anthem spread on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.

By midday on Monday, almost 20,000 fans had signed an online petition. Initiator Max Kirchi writes on the petition platform change.org: »Regardless of whether you were enthusiastic about the jersey or not, everyone agreed that the song matched a feeling of a new beginning in the national team and videos soon made the rounds showing them used that song as the goal anthem.«

Peter Schilling himself took up the petition and shared it in an Instagram story on Sunday.

So will it soon be “Completely detached from the earth / Does the spaceship float completely weightless” after German gates? According to information from the Sports Information Service, probably not. So far there has been no serious consideration of changing the anthem. This means that even in the event of a goal against the Netherlands on Tuesday (8.45 p.m. / TV: RTL / Live ticker: SPIEGEL.de) “Kernkraft 400” will be played by Zombie Nation.

In “Major Tom,” an astronaut floats “weightless” and “completely detached from the earth.” As in an earlier song by David Bowie (“Space Oddity”), he will no longer return to his home planet.
