Robinho's lawyers will appeal the decision to imprison him for 9 years (French)

Robinho, a former Brazilian football star, was arrested in the coastal city of Santos on Thursday, a day after a court sentenced him to 9 years in prison for raping a girl.

The Brazilian news agency reported that the authorities raided the home of Robinho (40 years old) and took him to the police station, and the former player underwent a medical examination in preparation for his transfer to prison.

Yesterday, Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Justice in Brazil ruled that the former Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Italian Milan striker be imprisoned in Brazil, in implementation of the ruling issued by the Italian judiciary against him after rejecting the appeal submitted by his lawyers against his arrest.

In 2017, an Italian court sentenced Robinho to 9 years in prison for his involvement in the gang rape of a woman in a nightclub in the Italian city of Milan in 2013.

After exhausting all appeals, the ruling became final in 2022, but by that time Robinho had already returned to Brazil.

Italy sought to ratify the ruling issued against Robinho in Brazil so that he could serve his sentence in his country, in light of Brazil not extraditing its citizens abroad, which was accepted by the Brazilian judiciary.

Robinho's lawyers indicated that they would appeal this decision.
