The previous U17 national coach Christian Wück will succeed interim national coach Horst Hrubesch for the German footballers after the Olympic Games in the summer.

The German Football Association (DFB) announced this on Friday.

Wück led the German U17 men's team to the World Cup title in Indonesia in December.

The 50-year-old has been working as a coach for various youth teams at the DFB since 2012, and his contract as U17 coach expires this summer.

Wück has not yet trained a women's team.

“Christian Wück is a proven expert, he speaks the language of the players,” emphasized DFB President Bernd Neuendorf.

Wück has proven “that he can develop personalities and form teams into a cohesive unit.

I am convinced that he is the right person to lead our team into the future after the Olympics.

Wück himself spoke of a “great honor” and said he didn’t hesitate long when making the request.

“Coaching this team, further developing the existing individual quality of the players and thus making the team fit for success in the future is one of the most exciting and responsible tasks in German football,” he said.

Hrubesch, who stepped in as interim coach after the separation from Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, secured the German women's participation in the Olympics for Paris last week with a 2-0 win against the Netherlands in Heerenveen.

The 72-year-old's involvement was limited from the outset until the games.

The striker idol then wants to concentrate again on his role as youth manager at Hamburger SV.
