Tough negotiations, but successful in the end: Coach Fabian Hürzeler has extended his contract with FC St. Pauli, which expires in the summer.

This was announced by the league leaders of the Second Bundesliga.

Both parties agreed not to disclose the details.

Whether the new working paper contains an exit clause is not officially known, nor is the contract term.

“I think the conversations were always very trusting,” said Hürzeler before Sunday’s game against Hertha BSC (1:30 p.m.; TV: Sky).

“I am very happy that I have extended my contract here and am extremely looking forward to continuing to work together,” added the 31-year-old.

It was a “clear confession” from him.

“Nevertheless, we all know how the business works,” said Hürzeler.

Hürzeler was promoted from co-coach to head coach of the neighborhood club in December 2022 as a 29-year-old.

At that time the team was in 15th place in the table.

St. Pauli is now the front runner, promotion favorite and Hürzeler is a sought-after coach who has also been linked to Bundesliga clubs VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg in recent weeks.

Negotiations regarding a contract extension began last September.

According to media reports, Hürzeler and his consulting agency insisted on an exit clause for a long time.
