Thomas Tuchel: Victory and pain

Coach Thomas Tuchel showed full commitment in Bayern Munich's round of 16 win against Lazio Rome in the Champions League - and paid for it with pain.

“The motivational speech before the game cost me my right toe,” said the limping coach on Prime Video after reaching the quarterfinals (3-0).

Tuchel reported that he kicked an object during his speech and injured himself, and that he sprayed spray on his foot during the encounter.

"I was treated immediately, but I no longer had the courage to step out of the shoe because I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get back in," said Tuchel.

That's why he "sat for 90 minutes" during the game.

Veteran Thomas Müller commented on the injury with humor.

»There is always a bit of loss, professional sport is always on edge.

“We just don’t do it with fruit tea,” he said.

Tuchel admitted that the success in the midst of the crisis season was one for the heart.

"Yes, yes - but for all of us," he said in response to a corresponding question: "We all have big goals, the minimum goal is the quarter-finals." There we now need "a little luck of the draw," otherwise: "We have to stick with it, to keep the momentum there.

It’s not that easy for us.”

Bayern continue their Bundesliga home game against Mainz 05 on Saturday.

The Munich team are currently ten points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

In the DFB Cup, the team was eliminated in the second round against 1. FC Saarbrücken.
