FC Bayern averted elimination in the Champions League.

Thanks to the 3-0 (2-0) win in the second leg of the round of 16 against Lazio Rome, Munich moved into the quarter-finals after losing the first leg 0-1.

The goals for coach Thomas Tuchel's team were scored by Harry Kane (39th minute/66th) and Thomas Müller (45th + 2).

The quarter-final duels will take place between April 9th and 17th, and Munich's opponent has not yet been determined.

Just over a week after the 1-0 defeat in the first leg at Lazio, FC Bayern announced that it would end its collaboration with coach Tuchel next summer.

Now FC Bayern needed a win by two goals to qualify for the next round - but also to avert an ultimately disastrous season.

The Munich team didn't take too many risks in the early stages against the Italians.

Although Leroy Sané (8th minute) had his first shots on goal from a tight angle, Jamal Musiala (14th) and Harry Kane (17th) had their first shots on goal from a distance, the shots did not pose any major problems for Lazio keeper Ivan Provedel.

Lazio has lost three of four league games since the win against Munich and is only ninth in Serie A - indications that FC Bayern were not exactly dealing with an overpowering opponent.

Unsurprisingly, coach Maurizio Sarri's team withdrew far back in the Munich Arena and left the ball to their opponents. But FC Bayern lacked speed and surprising actions to destroy the Italians' order.

When things got dangerous, it was after fine passes from Aleksandar Pavlović.

In the 24th minute, Munich's top talent initiated a good offensive action with a lob, and in the 39th minute the 19-year-old lifted the ball high into the penalty area again - this time with success.

The ball landed via Thomas Müller and Raphaël Guerreiro to Kane, who headed it in from six meters to take the lead.

Just a minute later, Musiala missed the 2-0 when he appeared free in front of the goal after a pass from Sané (40th).

Now the confidence that FC Bayern had lost in recent weeks was back, and the score was 2-0 before the break.

A corner from Guerreiro wasn't cleared properly, suddenly Matthijs de Ligt shot at goal again from the far corner of the penalty area and Müller stuck his head out from a few meters.

However, the Munich team also had a bit of luck - shortly before the score was 0-1, Lazio's Ciro Immobile missed the game's greatest chance to date with a header (37').

Kane is where he needs to be

In the summer, FC Bayern signed Kane from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur for around 100 million euros.

The 30-year-old now played a crucial role in progressing, with the Englishman making it 3-0 in the 66th minute.

Once again Pavlović brought the ball into the penalty area, Sané then finished and Kane took advantage of the rebound from close range.

There was no resistance from Lazio afterwards.

Bayern continue their Bundesliga home game against Mainz 05 on Saturday.

The Munich team are currently ten points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

In the DFB Cup, the team was eliminated in the second round against 1. FC Saarbrücken.

The Munich team currently has fewer worries in the Champions League.
