According to the Frankfurt (Oder) public prosecutor's office, Hertha President Kay Bernstein died of natural causes.

A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office told the dpa news agency after evaluating the toxicological and histological examination.

The spokeswoman did not provide any further information about the cause of death.

After the autopsy of Bernstein's body, the authorities had already announced that they "most likely assumed a natural death."

Toxicological and histological samples were taken for further examination.

After the sudden death of the club boss at the age of 43 on January 16th of this year, a death investigation was initiated in Brandenburg, where Bernstein lived on the outskirts of Berlin.

This is a normal process when the cause of death is unclear.

Ex-Ultra at the top of the club

Bernstein was a former Ultra of the Bundesliga club and became president of Hertha in difficult times.

Just months after his election, the relationship with the unpopular investor Lars Windhorst ended in a scandal.

The US investment company 777 Partners took over his shares and brought the club much-needed money.

Hertha was relegated from the Bundesliga for the seventh time and had to worry about its license for weeks (read more about it here).

Recently, however, the first successes have been achieved.

Bernstein's death in January sparked widespread sympathy and shock across the country.

The former lead singer in the Ostkurve had been president of his club since mid-2022.

He was extremely popular with Hertha supporters.

Numerous fans and many people from football honored him in the days after his death.
