Hamburger SV won the first game under new coach Steffen Baumgart and defeated SV Elversberg 1-0 (0-0).

SpVgg Greuther Fürth moved up to fourth place with a 2-1 (1-1) win in the Frankenderby against 1. FC Nürnberg and Fortuna Düsseldorf worsened Hansa Rostock's relegation worries with a 2-0 (2-0) win.

After the 23rd matchday in the 2nd Bundesliga, FC St. Pauli remains at the top of the table and is now six points ahead after their success against pursuers Holstein Kiel.

HSV is one point behind Kiel.

He already had stage fright, said Baumgart before his first game as HSV coach, then also in the Volksparkstadion.

Hamburg had conceded ten goals in the last three games there and Baumgart also said: “I think anyone who has watched my games will rarely see them keep a clean sheet.

But you will be able to create maybe three or four more chances to score.”

HSV initially didn't have many more scoring opportunities against Elversberg, Ransford Königsdörffer missed twice (6th minute/35th).

And the guests also had their chances (42nd/44th), although HSV largely controlled the proceedings.

The very active Königsdörffer finally took advantage of his third chance, after a pass from Glatzel, he shot from a tight angle into the short corner (53').

The 22-year-old had the next opportunity to decide the game a short time later (60'), and Immanuël Pherai also missed (90'+1).

Elversberg hardly had any opportunities, but for HSV it was the first home game without conceding a goal since the beginning of November.

Fortuna Düsseldorf only gets bad results, but they won't play badly, said Hansa Rostock coach Mersad Selimbegović before the game about Fortuna Düsseldorf, which had only gotten three points in 2024 so far - his team then felt that directly.

Within two minutes, Düsseldorf made it 2-0 against Hansa.

Felix Klaus converted a cross with the outside of his foot into the goal (16th), Ao Tanaka followed up with a long-range shot from 13 meters (18th).

In the last few games, Fortuna, which has the best offense in the league, had problems in defense and gave up leads carelessly.

Rostock also had their opportunities, but Júnior Brumado (33rd), Dennis Dressel (41st) and Svante Ingelsson (43rd) didn't take advantage of them.

Rostock struggled in the second half, but were not consistent enough in the end.

Düsseldorf took little risk.

Crucial weeks now await Hansa with games against direct competition to stay in the league: On March 2nd, the Rostock team will play against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, and six days later they will face Eintracht Braunschweig.

Fürth coach Alexander Zorniger said during the week that he was “glad” that the games could now most likely take place without interruption due to fan protests, and that his players were “unhappy”.

Even without a break, Fürth initially had problems in the 272nd edition of the oldest derby in German football.

After a diagonal ball across half the field, Nuremberg's Benjamin Goller had plenty of space for a cross, the ball deflected to Sebastian Andersson, who made it 0-1 with a headed header (9th).

Goller then had a great chance to make it 2-0, but his shot landed on the post (25th) - it was to be Nuremberg's last shot on goal of the entire game.

Instead, the hosts equalized in return, Armindo Sieb made it 1-1 with his eighth goal of the season (27th).

When Nuremberg's Jens Castrop had to leave the field with a yellow-red card (34'), Fürth finally took over the game.

Branimir Hrgota's 2-1 was prevented by the post (47th), but nothing stood in the way of Sieb's next long-range shot (57th).

Nuremberg couldn't find any solutions when they were outnumbered, Sieb (74th) and Marco Meyerhöfer (83rd) missed the preliminary decision.
