While the fighting rages on the Eastern Front and Russian strikes are still part of daily life for Ukrainians, the France 24 teams looked at European aid for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

If the United Nations highlights a significant drop in donations in favor of kyiv, European support has never wavered while more than 90% of Ukrainians still wish to join the European Union.

The fighting has left about a fifth of Ukraine's territory under Russian control.

Millions of Ukrainians have had to flee the country or their home region, but this has not deterred Ukraine from seeking full EU membership.

The country received a decisive signal in December, when all 27 member states agreed to begin accession talks with Volodymyr Zelensky.

In February, a compromise was even found with Hungary to unlock a financial support program of 50 billion euros for Ukraine.

Throughout the war, and even before, the EU was a key partner, providing at least €85 billion in aid to the country.

Return to the martyr cities of Ukraine

In the second part of this special broadcast, we focus on the economic situation in the country.

Where are towns like Boutcha, Hostomel, Irpin or Bordayanka?

These martyr towns in the northern suburbs of kyiv were particularly affected from the first weeks of the Russian assault.

We look at concrete examples of reconstruction and EU support for small and medium-sized businesses, such as the Dim bakery in Bucha, which is run by refugees from eastern Ukraine and, like several hundred businesses or companies, obtained a grant from the EU.

We discuss the importance of these projects with high-level representatives of the EU delegation to Ukraine, Iryna Hubarets and Alberto Fernandez-Diez.

This second part of Europe in all its states is also an opportunity to visit the town of Borodyanka, devastated in February-March 2022 with more than 1,600 damaged buildings.

In the new administrative services center funded by the UN and EU, we meet Liudmyla Buimister, an independent member of the Ukrainian Parliament.

She highlights the importance of reconstruction plans, EU-aligned local administration reforms and talks about her hopes for Ukraine's anti-corruption efforts.

Focus on EU cohesion funds and their consequences

In animation, Sophie Samaille looks at the repercussions of the war in Ukraine within the countries of the European Union, in particular on the cost of living crisis and on the way in which EU funds, including cohesion funds are used to fight inflation within the 27.

In a report, Luke Brown examines how EU cohesion funds are supporting Ukrainians in Poland and addresses fears of "social dumping" - how a labor force cheaper Ukrainian could harm the local job market, particularly in the field of road transport, the demonstrations of which caused months of blockages on the Polish-Ukrainian border.
