The former national soccer player Jérôme Boateng will play in the Italian Serie A in the future. The 35-year-old former world champion's move to US Salernitana is fixed, as the club from Salerno in southern Italy announced on Friday. Both sides have therefore agreed on a contract until June 30, 2024. Boateng should wear the number 5 jersey for the current bottom team in Serie A, it was said.

»I'm happy to be here and play for this great club and its passionate fans. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent this beautiful city and region," Boateng wrote on Friday on X, formerly Twitter. »I am very pleased to be able to continue my career here and contribute to the success of the club. I will give everything so that we achieve our goals. Forza Salernitana!”

There has been speculation for a few weeks now about the ex-Bayern player's move to Italy. Boateng landed in Salerno on Wednesday and underwent medical examinations on Thursday. According to media reports, he has already met Salernitana's coach Pippo Inzaghi and got to know his new teammates.

Boateng became world champion with Germany at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He won the Champions League twice with FC Bayern. He last played in France for Olympique Lyon, but had been without a club for around six months. In the meantime there had also been talks about a return to Bayern, and Boateng was temporarily training at Säbener Straße. The thought game caused irritation before it was rejected.

Boateng is accused of violently attacking his ex-girlfriend. He was found guilty by two courts, and in September the Bavarian Supreme Court overturned the conviction due to procedural errors. The process is being reopened. (Read more here.)
