Two former Bundesliga professionals shot former national coach Jürgen Klinsmann and South Korea into the semi-finals of the Asian Cup. With late goals, Hwang Hee-chan and Son Heung-min turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 (1-1, 0-1) win after extra time against Australia in the quarter-finals on Friday.

In the duel between two World Cup round of 16 in Al-Wakrah, Qatar, the former Leipzig player Hwang (90th + 6 minutes) converted a penalty that was awarded to Son. Then South Korea's captain, who played for Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen from 2008 to 2015, scored 2-1 from a direct free kick in the 104th minute.

Australia first in the lead, later outnumbered

The Australians took the lead in the 42nd minute through Craig Goodwin. In extra time, midfielder Aiden O'Neill was shown a red card for serious foul play according to video evidence (105.+4), after the referee had initially only shown him a yellow card.

South Korea will now face Jordan in the semi-finals of the Asian Football Championship on Tuesday. Then national coach Klinsmann has to do without defender Kim Min-jae from FC Bayern Munich due to a yellow card suspension.
