Burkina Faso finished second in Group D, behind Angola but ahead of Mauritania and Algeria. The Étalons beat the Mourabitounes (1-0) then drew against Algeria (2-2) to ensure their qualification.
On the Mali side, the journey was similar. An inaugural victory against South Africa (3-0) before draws against Tunisia (1-1) and Namibia (0-0). Enough to prance at the top of group E.

The meeting between the two neighbors separated by only 650 km promises sparks: both teams are candidates for the coronation, after each losing a final. Like Burkina Faso, this is Mali's 13th participation in an African Cup of Nations.
