Today's poster: Senegal - Ivory Coast

Three matches, three victories. Senegal made its champion rank known in the first round of this CAN 2024. It easily disposed of Gambia (3-0), Cameroon (3-2) and Guinea (2-0). Opposite, Ivory Coast is experiencing a complicated tournament. The host country won in the opening match against Guinea-Bissau (2-0) but then lost against Nigeria (1-0) before being humiliated by Equatorial Guinea (4-0) .

In short, a gala clash between the African champion and the host country!

The man to watch: Emerse Fae

The Ivorian Emerse Faé took his place on the Ivory Coast bench to act as interim after the ousting of Jean-Louis Gasset. At 40, after an honorable playing career in Ligue 1, the ambitious new coach of the Elephants has established himself as "a man on the ground" as a coach. Although he is starting in this position, the one who has worked with the group for a year and a half as an assistant wants to "show another face to the Ivorian people" on Monday against Senegal.

What happened yesterday

The Syli winner of “Guinéico”

: Guinea did not miss its quarter. The national Syli obtained its place among the eight best teams of the tournament by beating Equatorial Guinea, yet one of the sensations of the first round. It took a red card, a missed penalty and the entries of Guirassy and Naby Keita for a goal in the very last minute of added time to free Kaba Diawara's men.

DR Congo overcomes Egypt

: at the end of an indecisive match between two teams with diametrically opposed styles, enthusiasm took over experience. But it was long and laborious. We had to wait for the 9th shooter of the penalty session and the miss of the Egyptian goalkeeper Gabaski to determine a winner.

In short

“Gbin Gbin So”:

behind this primal cry hides the catchy chant of Guinea supporters. The term draws its essence from the sound of the elephant's footsteps, a majestic and powerful animal. “Gbin Gbin” evokes the earthquake as the elephant approaches. “Gbin Gbin So” symbolizes the imposing and triumphant arrival of the Syli National, making the earth vibrate and Guinean pride resonate with each match.

Guinea breaks the curse:

Syli National had never won a knockout match in its history. She lost in the round of 16 in the last two editions. Under the old CAN formula, when the selections went directly to the quarters, they lost four matches at this stage. However, on paper, Guinea's best performance in a CAN remains a 2nd place obtained in 1976. But at that time, it was a final group which decided the four finalists, therefore no direct elimination matches.

Like an air of Ivory Coast:

the scenario of the extended penalty shootout between DR Congo and Egypt must have brought back good memories to the Ivorian supporters present at the San Pedro stadium. And for good reason: the Elephants won their two continental trophies in similar sessions, each time with their goalkeeper – Alain Gouaméné in 1992 and Copa Barry in 2015 – as a hero of the nation. Like Mpasi this evening who scored the victorious penalty as the 9th shooter for the DR Congo.

The only thing better than a winning penalty is a winning penalty scored by a goalkeeper. 😏🇨🇩#TotalEnergiesAFCON2023 pic.twitter.com/pUqbBN12Xr

Today's statement

Emerse Faé, Ivory Coast coach:

“Ivory Coast will remain Ivory Coast, even if we did not perform well in the group stage. If we ask Senegal which team they want to face in the round of 16 final, he will choose a team other than Côte d'Ivoire which occupied the best third place."
