That Cape Verde reached the round of 16 of the CAN is not necessarily a surprise. Since their quarter-final in 2013, the Blue Sharks have shown that they are not there to make up the numbers, having already reached the round of 16 in the previous edition, lost to Senegal, future champion.

But from there to seeing Cape Verde finish first in their group, after a convincing inaugural success against Ghana (1-0), a large victory over Mozambique (3-0), which already assured them qualification after only two matches. The draw then snatched from Egypt (2-2) concluded the journey of this “thrill team” in the first round of CAN 2024.

Mauritania is the surprise of this final picture. By beating - and eliminating - Algeria (1-0) in the last group match, it offered itself a first victory in three participations in the African Cup of Nations, and a golden ticket to the eighth. The Mourabitounes are among the best thirds in the first round, despite defeats against Burkina Faso (0-1), then against Angola (2-3).
