A humiliating defeat in front of its public against Equatorial Guinea, its coach Jean-Louis Gasset sacked by the Ivorian football federation for "insufficient results"... The last days of Côte d'Ivoire at CAN 2024 - that it organizes at home - look like a nightmare.

After a good start against Guinea-Bissau (2-0), the Ivorians were beaten by Nigeria (0-1), then crushed by Equatorial Guinea (0-4).

With 3 points and a goal difference of -3, the Elephants finished third in group A and must wait for the results of the other teams, Wednesday January 24, to know whether or not they will be part of the four best thirds who go to the eighth final of the African Cup of Nations.

Report “Worse than shame!”

: the anger of Ivory Coast supporters, on the verge of elimination

  • The best third place system

This system is in place for the third consecutive CAN.

For CAF, it aims to balance the number of teams qualified for the round of 16.

6 groups of 4 teams currently, the first two directly qualified and the four best thirds drafted for the knockout matches.

  • Group E: qualification if Mali wins and Tunisia loses at the same time

Two scenarios can still allow Ivory Coast to advance: in group E, Mali must beat Namibia and at the same time South Africa must not lose against Tunisia.

  • Group F: automatic qualification if Morocco wins against Zambia

Otherwise, in Group F, a victory for Morocco at the expense of Zambia would automatically send Ivory Coast to the final phase.

In the event of qualification, it is therefore Emerse Faé, assistant to Jean-Louis Gasset, who will take his place on the bench

All Ivorians repeat it to our special correspondents, there are no greater supporters of Morocco than them!
