Bayern Munich went to snatch an eleventh consecutive German league title on the last day of the Bundesliga, Saturday, May 27, thanks to its victory on the lawn of Cologne (2-1) and the draw of Borussia Dortmund at home against Mainz (2-2).

After French striker Kinsgley Coman opened the scoring and Dejan Ljubicic equalised for Cologne from a penalty, it was Jamal Musiala who scored the winning goal in Munich in the 89th minute, synonymous with another title, the hardest to conquer since the beginning of Bavarian hegemony in May 2013.

Bayern's top scorer this season but inconsistent, Serge Gnabry was one of the architects of the new Munich national title, alongside Jamal Musiala, author of the decisive goal on Saturday, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, while Sadio Mané disappointed in his first season in Bavaria.

For Borussia Dortmund, who had the cards in hand to become German champions for the first time since 2012, this is another terrible disappointment, which will have to be digested for the coming seasons.

The artisans of the title

Erased since the World Cup, Jamal Musiala scored Saturday the goal of the title in Cologne, in the last minutes (2-1), finding the spark at the best time, after a season where he knew the light and then the shadow.

Not even 20 years old, "Bambi", his nickname within the team, confirmed all the expectations placed in him, with nine goals and seven assists until mid-November, but the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, ended with an elimination of the Mannschaft in the first round, broke his momentum. His second half of the season, much less brilliant, gives a glimpse of the margin of progression of the diamond of German football to polish in the years to come, like his jewel of final goal.

Intermittent in his performances, Serge Gnabry woke up at the best time, at the end of the season to get Bayern out of bad situations against Hertha Berlin and Bremen.

Since arriving in Munich in the autumn of 2020, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has been the symbol of Bayern's best period in the heart of autumn, six goals and two assists from the seven wins and a league draw to take control of the table. Unfortunately, the Cameroon international was caught by physical glitches (back and knee), and was sorely missed at Bayern.

Bayern's star recruit last summer, Sadio Mané disappointed. Since his return after a fracture of the right fibula on November 8, 2022, Sadio Mané has never regained his effectiveness, and his altercation in the dressing rooms of the Etihad of Manchester City with Leroy Sané has cost him sportingly (internal suspension of a match) and financially (record fine), while his image has been somewhat tarnished.

As for Kingsley Coman, he already had hero status at Bayern, thanks to his goal in the Champions League final at the end of August 2020. His goal on Saturday in Cologne, which allowed Bayern to win an eleventh consecutive title, engraved a little more his Munich legend, one of the only safe values for the Bavarians, at the end of a successful season.

Ranking

Behind the trio Dortmund, Bayern and RB Leipzig, assured of its third place before the last day, it is Union Berlin who wins the fourth place synonymous with qualification for the next group stage of the Champions League, thanks to its victory at home against Wolsfburg (1-0).

Beaten on the pitch of Eintracht Frankfurt, Freiburg (2-1) will play in the Europa League, while Bayer Leverkusen beaten in Bochum (3-0) retains its place in the Europa League Conference next season.

Schalke is relegated with Hertha Berlin after its defeat in Leipzig, while Stuttgart will have to play a play-off in early June against the 3rd of the second division to hope to save itself in the Bundesliga.
