Arsenal hang on. The Gunners beat Newcastle (2-0) and do not lose hope in the title race despite the advantage left to Manchester City. Three days from the end, Arsenal return to only one point of the Citizens who are however one game behind.

At the price of a very big tactical performance, Arsenal went to win Sunday at the third Newcastle (2-0) and hang on in the title race. This success at the Magpies who had lost only once at home this season, allows the Gunners to return to one point behind Manchester City, even if they have one game more than the title holders.

Newcastle could be overtaken by Manchester United, 4th with two points less, but who travel to West Ham in the evening in the last match of the 35th day, while Liverpool prowl three lengths, but with one game more.

Combative arsenal

If Mikel Arteta's men have lost the hand in the title race, they have shown that they have no intention of giving up after having scored for 30 days at the top of the table this season. They were able to recover from a complicated start to the match where Jacob Murphy found the post after only 2 minutes of play, before referee Chris Kavanagh, called to the edge of the key to review the images, cancelled the penalty he had whistled for a hand of Jakub Kiwior on a strike of Bruno Guimaraes (8th).

They even quickly regained their footing by opening the scoring in the 14th on a 28-meter strike from Martin Odegaard (1-0), the Norwegian's 13th goal in the game this season, a record for a midfielder ahead of Frank Lampard in 2009/2010 (12). It was also his 15th league goal, giving Arsenal two players for the first time, with Gabriel Martinelli, with 15 or more goals in a Premier League season.

Hopes of a misstep

Early in the second half, Martinelli found the top of the crossbar on a shot wrapped in the box (51st). But the Brazilian ended up being decisive, even if it took a boost from their opponent, Fabian Schär deflecting into his cages his retreating centre in the 71st to allow Arsenal to break away.

In addition to the post at the very beginning of the match, Newcastle will regret the beautiful exit of Aaron Ramsdale in the feet of Callum Wilson (28th) or his parry on a header of Schär 7 meters from the goal (49th), but he was able to measure what still separates a candidate for the Champions League and a candidate for the title, while Arsenal continue to hope for a misstep from the Citizens.
