When is the 2023 IIHF World Championship?
The premiere will be played on May 12 and the championship will conclude with the final on Sunday May 28.
Where is the 2023 IIHF World Championship being played?
Initially, the championship was supposed to be played in St. Petersburg, Russia, but with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Russia was stripped of the championship. Now it is instead shared between Finland and Latvia. The matches will be played in Nokia Arena in Tampere and Arena Riga in the Latvian capital Riga.
How the IIHF World Championship 2023 works
The 16 teams are divided into two eight-team groups. Everyone meets everyone within each group and then four teams per group advance to the quarter-finals. There, the team that finished first in one group meets it as the team that finished fourth in the other group. The group runners-up are pitted against the third-placed teams from the other group.
In the semifinals, the highest ranked team that made it there is pitted against the lowest ranked team that made it. The ranking is based on the following criteria:
1. Placement in the group stage.
2. The number of points in the group stage.
3. Goal difference in the group stage.
4. Number of goals scored in the group stage.
5. Seeding for the tournament.
