Not since Mario Lemieux in the 1995/1996 season has an NHL player scored 150 or more points in a single season.

But now, for the first time in almost 30 years, it has happened again.

Fixture Connor McDavid had two goals and an assist as his Edmonton team beat Detroit 6-1, bringing it up to a total of 151 points this season (64+87).

"I haven't thought about it that much," says the 26-year-old himself.

Gretzky tops the list

Only five other players have accomplished the feat. Wayne Gretzky holds the NHL record with 215 points in a season (1985/1986) but has also been over 150 points an astonishing nine times. Mario Lemieux has done it four times (199 as best listing) and Steve Yzerman (155), Phil Esposito (152) and Bernie Nicholls (150) once each.

"I got to see a video of the other five who made it happen, and it hit me, to hear from them was amazing and meant a lot to me," McDavid said.

"The best in the whole world"

Teammate Zach Hyman:

"He's the sixth ever, that says it all. There are no words. Obviously, he's the best player in the world and he just keeps pushing his own limits.

The Canadian currently tops the scoring, assists and scoring leagues in the NHL.

And the competitors are not even very close. The runner-up in scoring, chainmate Leon Draisaitl, for example, is 27 points behind.

Since being selected number one in the 2015 draft, McDavid has averaged an insane scoring average of 848 points (303+545) in 567 games.
