He himself experienced a similar incident in the Tour de Ski 2020 when Erik Valnes slowed down in the sprint in the fight for a final place in a sprint. Then Golberg secured valuable points in the summary.

"It has happened before that someone has been released to take bonus points and final positions. We see that the assessment is a bit too inconsistent, so a clarification would be quite good, says Golberg, who is considering whether he should quit, to NRK.

There are several episodes over the years where skaters have paved the way for each other for various reasons, but Ilar may well be the first to be dished for it.

The superior World Cup winner Johannes Hösflot Kläbo wants clearer directives on what are team tactics and what is unsportsmanlike behavior.

"Manipulation of results not allowed"

"Fis absolutely has to do that. There are always two sides to the coin, but for Maja Dahlqvist it was crucial. It was perhaps a little too obvious in Lahti," says Kläbo.

The International Ski Federation, FIS, regulations from 2016 state, among other things:

"Any manipulation of a sports result is not allowed as it can undermine confidence in the sport and the natural outcome".

FI's cross-country manager Michal Lamplot declined to comment on the difference between Ilar's and Valne's run, but said the circumstances surrounding the race in Lathis were decisive.

"The situation was special because it was the last sprint of the season and was decisive for the outcome of the sprint cup overall," says Lamplot.

The issue will be discussed at the congress in Dubrovnik in the spring.
