For a long time, the Swedish Championship gold in the men's five-mile race seemed to be between Jens Burman and Johan Häggström. Gustaf Berglund was seventh, over a minute behind leading Burman.

But then Berglund geared up – substantially. He won the Swedish Championship a full 22 seconds ahead of Burman who took the silver while the bronze went to Häggström.

"I had really good skis and felt very strong in the last mile. Then I thought I had to go for the gold. Then I definitely didn't think it would be able to go all the way, says Berglund.

He feels that it really came off today.

"This gold means a lot. Me and my coach Ida Ingemarsdotter have been working on technical details during the summer and autumn and finally it comes off. I haven't had time to collect myself yet, but it's just feelings of happiness.

On the women's side, Ebba Andersson won the gold in the three-mile.
