The new rules include stricter guidelines of so-called "disqualifying points" for club owners in the Premier League.

The rule changes mean the league will not allow club owners or club directors guilty of human rights abuses. The same is also true for people or companies that have been subjected to government sanctions.

The league is also broadening the type of crimes that are disqualifying for club owners to now also include violence, corruption, fraud, tax evasion and hate crimes.

"The test has been criticized"

The rules are implemented directly for future changes of ownership and new club directors. Current owners and club tops should be reviewed annually based on the updated rules.

"These are real changes because now it will be much tougher to go through the ownership and director test. The test has been criticized a lot before, some have said that it is toothless and that it should be sharper. Now the league will say they have listened to that criticism," Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol said in a commentary.
