The Swedish champion team Rosengård was unexpectedly eliminated from the group stage of the Swedish Cup after Saturday's 1-1 match against Linköping.

Next season, the Malmö club may be forced to sit out the cup entirely.

Häcken (second in the women's league last year) and Linköping (third) will also be faced with the same problem if the teams reach the group stage of the Champions League (CL).

Because in the event of a successful CL qualification, a record-long season awaits for the top clubs in Ladies' Sweden.

Two CL matches in January

Namely, Uefa has placed the last two group stage rounds of the tournament on the other side of the New Year - on 24-25 and 30-31 January, respectively.

If the Swedish Cup follows the same arrangement as this year, the first group stage match will be played at the end of February 2024.

- If the cup matches are the way they are now, we cannot participate.

The players have the right to vacation according to the agreement and the law, says Therese Sjögran, sports manager in Rosengård, which won the cup last year.

When Uefa presented its calendar for the 2023–2024 season, Sjögren wrote to the Swedish Football Association to draw the association's attention to the problem.

- The calendar for 2024 has not been set, but the association still knows what it looks like.

It is us, Häcken and Linköping who have the opportunity to play in the Champions League - the three best teams from the previous year.

Shouldn't they be in the cup?

What will then be the value of the Swedish Cup?

The Soccer World Cup affects

The upcoming season is heavily influenced by the soccer World Cup in New Zealand and Australia July 20–August 20.

This means that the Champions League does not start its group stage until November 14–15 – the women's league plays its last round on November 11.

TT has applied for the chairman of the association's competition development committee.
