Fontaine became famous during the World Cup in Sweden in 1958, where he scored 13 goals in six games.

No male player has scored more goals in one and the same playoff.

As early as 1962, he was forced to quit football at the age of 28, due to injury.

During his playing career, Fontaine represented French clubs Nice and Reims as well as Casablanca in his native Morocco.

As a coach, he coached the big teams Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse and the Moroccan national team.

He was 89 years old.
