Wendie Renard has made 142 international appearances for France and, among other things, won nine titles in the Champions League with her club team Lyon.

But the French centre-back star will not play in this summer's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

On social media, the 32-year-old writes that she is giving up the championship because she needs to think about her mental health.

"I have worn the blue, white and red shirt 142 times with passion, respect and professionalism.

I love France more than anything," she writes on Instagram.

"I'm far from perfect"

Renard has previously played two World Cups with France and played three matches for the national team in February.

Several media outlets, including RMC Sport, have reported that Renard does not get along well with French national team captain Corinne Diacre.

“I am far from perfect, but I can no longer stand behind the current system.

It is a sad but necessary day.”

The WC in Australia and New Zealand will be played from July 20 to August 20.
