An opinion poll conducted by Novus on behalf of SVT Sport shows that a majority (56 percent) is in favor of a Swedish boycott of the championship if Russia is allowed to participate.

Only 25 percent of the respondents believe that Sweden should not boycott.

- I think perhaps it is natural that quite a few people react in that way, says the Swedish Sports Confederation's chairman Björn Eriksson, but explains in the next breath that it is not currently relevant for the RF to recommend any boycotts:

- We boycott if the UN and the EU have decided so.

And we do that because it is the same rules as when Swedish companies export goods and so on.

It would be strange if sport went further than politics.

RF chairman: "Is against it"

However, Björn Eriksson is clear in his opinion regarding Russian participation in international sports championships.

- I am against it.

And we have made a joint Nordic proclamation in which the Nordic national sports federations and Olympic committees have declared that we think it is wrong.

We think the IOC is wrong in its recommendation.

But if it happens that it is carried out, that Russia is allowed to participate, then we will probably participate in the Olympic Games.

The IOC chief: "No solution"

However, IOC chief Christophe Dubi believes that boycotts are a bad idea.

- Boycott is not a solution.

If you watched the last Australian Open, Russian and Ukrainian players met, and it was a Belarusian who won the tournament.

They hurt hands and hugged.

It shows that the sports field is a place where you can meet even if your countries are at war in a friendly and respectful way, he says, and continues:

- This is where we unite the world.

That is our mission.
