In Brynäs, Börje Salming got to play with his brother Stig - and also win two SM golds.

On Saturday, Salming, who died in the aftermath of the nerve disease als in November, was honored with a star-studded veteran match between Tre Kronor and the Toronto Maple Leafs, with Mats Sundin among others in the team.

In the Toronto team, Börje Salming's longtime friend and teammate Darryl Sittler was the coach.

- Many thanks to the audience that came, what money we have collected.

Hopefully they got some okay hockey, even though we've gotten old.

It's a magical day for all of us, says Mats Sundin in TV4 and continues:

- It was a fun day to experience.

The family in place

"Game for Börje", as Saturday's match was named, was sold out and all proceeds go directly to Salming's foundation, which contributes to finding a curative treatment for als.

After the match, the campaign had raised over seven million kroner, according to TV4.

- It feels stressful at the moment.

We see the influx in the stands and everything goes in Börje's name.

That is as honorable as it can ever be.

I look forward to having a nice experience where we remember Börje in the best way, said Stig Salming to Aftonbladet before the match.

Just in time for the start of the match, Börje Salming's shirt number 17 was hoisted up next to Stig's, whose number 14 was already hanging from the ceiling.

Daughter Bianca and wife Pia were there and had difficulty holding back tears.

- It is honorable for Börje, now he didn't get to experience it himself, but we have to hope that the gods are there to tell the story, says Stig Salming in TV4.

- I had no expectations at all.

I wasn't that aware but just knew it was going to be a tribute match.

Now I feel that it will be incredibly nice.

I am so happy that I could dot in not having any competition this weekend and be here, said Bianca Salming to Expressen after the first period.

Emotional for many

NHL legend Rick Vaive, who was a teammate of Börje Salming in the Toronto Maple Leafs, talks about the Swede's importance.

- At the beginning it was very emotional.

I can't remember the last time I cried, but it must have been when my first child was born.

It was tough.

This is something we do for Börje and for everyone who is affected by als.

He was an incredible teammate and an even better person, says Vaive.
