The 35-year-old lefty has had a tough year.

He suffered a blood clot, returned to Denmark after ten years abroad and was then one of the key players in the bid for the WC in Sweden and Poland.

Sick leave for an indefinite period

It has become too much, writes his club Aalborg Håndbold in a press release.

Together with the club, doctors and his family, the decision has been made that Mikkel Hansen is on sick leave for an indefinite period.

- After returning home from the WC, it turned out that the cup was full and together we have made the only real decision, that Mikkel gets the necessary and professional support, says Jan Larsen, director of the club.

"Have to take care of yourself"

The Aalborg club asks the media and others to give Mikkel Hansen and his family the necessary time together without disturbance.

- We look forward to Mikkel coming back, but now the most important thing is that he gets to take care of himself and his family, says Jan Larsen.

Mikkel Hansen came to Aalborg ahead of the current season after ten years at French Paris Saint-Germain.

The Danish star has been named the world's best player three times by the International Handball Federation.
